A FEW MINUTES AGO, on pure impulse, I jumped up from the desk and measured the aggregate length of the shelves occupied by my reference books: that is to say, shelving for dictionaries, encyclopaedias, thesauruses, dictionaries of quotations, concordances and "companions" to this, that and the other. (I don't know how you would classify Gordon & Gotch's Australasian Newspaper Directory for 1888, but you'd be surprised how often this worn little brown book can supply an answer.)
The steel tape-measure gave its reply to my unexpected question: "About thirty-six feet". My response was: "Thirty-six feet of treasures".
