For student recruitment and retention, some schools may choose to showcase new dorms or athletics facilities, but what students are really looking for may surprise administrators: academic buildings.

According to a study sponsored by the Association of Higher Education Facilities Officers, buildings related to students' majors are the most important. More than 73% of the 13,782 students included in the survey called facilities for their major "extremely important" or "very important" in their choice of schools.

Other high-ranking facilities included: library at 54%, sophisticated technology at 51%, classrooms at 50% and residence halls at 42%. Performing arts centers were extremely or very important to 22% of students, ...
