In what appears to be a growing trend, more colleges are moving away from requiring students to submit standardized tests scores as part of applications.
Officials at George Mason University in Virginia announced that they will allow some students to apply for admission without submitting SAT scores. High school students in the top 20% of their class with a GPA of 3.5 or better can apply without the SAT, but they need two extra letters of recommendation and an essay.
Dean of admissions Andrew Flagel said the university found that SAT scores were poor predictors of how students would fare there. Critics say they also promote bias against women and minorities.
