Mall (over)haul: Boone center gaining size, anchors.

May 26--The new owners of Boone Mall are in the midst of an expansion and renovation project that they hope will position the mall as the region's dominant retail center.

An Old Navy store is being added as a third anchor store to complement Belk and JCPenney, among other improvements.

In the meantime, the front entrance is closed and construction equipment is in the parking lot facing U.S. 321, but the owners say they hope that people realize that the mall welcomes them.

"It's open, Brian Ayers (art exhibition) is going on, it's vibrant, we have plenty of parking," said Barry Nicholson, a spokesman for H.L. Libby …
