SOME FORTY YEARS ago the Sydney writer Mena Abdullah published a collection of stories about the travails, pain and joys of growing up Muslim in Australia. It was Time of the Peacock, published by Angus & Robertson. The late Ray Mathew was her collaborator.

Mena Abdullah's father was an immigrant from India or what is now Pakistan. He arrived in Australia with no money but with a copy of the Koran. His daughter Mena was born in 1930 and spent much of her childhood on a sheep farm on the Gwydir in northern New South Wales before moving with her family to Gladesville, on the Parramatta River in Sydney.
