The first major hurricane of the year in the Atlantic has yet to groan its way over the horizon, but reinsurers are already wondering how to pay for it. New options are available, but many of these remain to be tested.
Alternative risk transfer (ART) has come a long way from its early days as a somewhat obscure aspect of financial reinsurance in the US. At the same time insurance funding started to grow with the development of captives, ART has also grown worldwide and is now starting to attract interest from investors wondering what this strange new plant is in the garden of reinsurance.
