Typhoon Ewiniar has struck western South Korea, with heavy rains and strong winds bringing substantial damage across the country.
The typhoon passed over to the East Sea on the early morning of 11 July but, contrary to original forecasts, it unexpectedly changed direction to the right, causing a great deal of damage to the Yeongnam, Honam and Chungcheong regions.
Contrary to initial forecasts that Ewiniar would enter the West Sea, the typhoon approached the southern coast of South Jeolla Province around 10:50am on 10 July, somewhat weakening but still remaining a middle-sized typhoon with an atmospheric pressure of 985 hectopascals and a maximum wind speed of 23m per second (83km per hour).
A change in the typhoon's course meant southern areas, Chungcheong and east coast regions were affected by heavy rain while the mid-west regions were damaged from strong winds.
