SALT OF THE EARTH 
 
   That brackish lingering Solway smell 
   when the tide went miles out 
   and left the spiralled 
   excavations of sandworms. Salt-- 
 
   it was our tribute, a cone of oxide 
   on a Mysore merchant's scales; 
   a supply of domesticity 
   for the roundhouse of Ledoux's ideal city;
