Computer science is getting an extreme makeover at some schools in order to appeal to women and underrepresented minorities.

Stars Alliance, a 10-school consortium, just received a $2 million, three-year grant from the National Science Foundation. Stars Alliance wants to open tech courses to under-represented groups by promoting IT as more welcoming and sociable than its reputation. "IT and computing have the image of not being a very people-friendly field," said Theresa Dahlberg, associate professor of computer science at the University of North Carolina.

One approach is to put the more fun stuff--courses on Web site development and multimedia applications--before the duller math and coding ...
