Chief Medical Officer, Professor Sir Liam Donaldson, today published his Annual Report, On the State of Public Health, which highlights major regional and national public health issues.

This year's challenge looks at the sharp increase in syphilis infections in the East Midlands in recent years. Although numbers are generally small, there have been substantial localised outbreaks in Nottinghamshire - where the number of new cases rose from two in 2000 to 59 by 2004 - and Leicestershire.
