A new city plan announced earlier this week authorizes any adult resident of the city of San Francisco, regardless of immigration or employment status, access to full health care coverage, the Associated Press reports.
Mayor Gavin Newsom's (D) ambitious plan seeks to cover more than 80,000 uninsured residents who cannot afford health coverage but whose salaries are too high for Medicaid.
Millions of Americans are not covered under any health insurance plan, the mayor pointed out, adding that his plan goes beyond expressing concerns for this segment of the population. It proactively addresses the problem with a tangible solution.
"Rather than lamenting about the fact that we live in a country with 45.8 million Americans that don't have health insurance ... San Francisco is doing something about it. San Francisco is moving forward to fulfill its moral obligation," he told AP.
