IT HAD TO HAPPEN that there would be a reappraisal of uranium mining, and ultimately of the whole role of nuclear power, in Australia and in the rest of the world. There is some irony in the fact that much of the pressure which has forced a rethinking of attitudes towards uranium and the nuclear power industry has come from amongst those who used to be its most vociferous opponents, the environmentalists, and is the result of one of their most successful campaigns, that against the dangers of global warming and the production of greenhouse gases conducive to that feared result.
