Three automakers have recalled close to 350,000 mostly late-model cars and sport-utility vehicles because of various fuel-tank-related problems that could lead to gasoline leaks and, possibly, fires.
The largest recall involves 205,000 2003 to 2006 model year Nissan Muranos. The position of the fuel tank makes it susceptible to damage from sharp objects in the road that get kicked up into it by the front tires.
On 123,206 2005 Ford Five Hundreds and Freestyles and Mercury Montegos, the fuel-tank straps could break, causing the tank and its heat shield to drop onto the driveshaft or exhaust system. If that happens, the tank could rupture.
The recall of 17,263 2005 Land Rover LR3 SUVs involves problems other than the risk of fire. ...
