New technologies permeate all aspects of our lives. Our vehicles are no exception. Too often, though, modern automotive gizmos can be frustrating, counterintuitive, or just plain expensive to buy and own.
Microchips have sparked critical advancements such as air bags, stability control, and engine-control systems. However, we found several innovations to be frustrating:
MULTIFUNCTION CONTROLS
Modern luxury cars have a large number of electronic features. To simplify the interior, some manufacturers combine many functions into one system. Simple one-button changes, such as adjusting audio modes or fan speeds, can now require wading through menus and making multiple control inputs. This is frustrating and can be distracting.
Easier systems, like that in the Infiniti M35, combine "hard keys" for the most-used functions with a multifunction control for less-used functions, or use a touch screen. In our testing, we found BMW's iDrive and Audi's MMI systems particularly complicated. Some cars, however, omit the multifunction control if you skip the navigation system option.
NAVIGATION SYSTEMS
Having an electronic map and route-finding computer can be a boon to drivers who travel to unfamiliar places. However, their downsides can leave you feeling lost.
