The Canadian record company Analekta has for the past decade been making some of the best Baroque recordings on the market, thanks in large measure to the talents of Jeanne Lamon and her superb Tafelmusik Baroque Orchestra, so you would expect any collection of Baroque music from Analekta to feature Lamon's group prominently. It does, and the results are generally favorable.
I suppose in the long run that if I had to hear bits and pieces of Baroque music, I would have preferred to hear it all from a single ensemble, like Tafelmusik. But it is not to be. Analekta's intent here is to provide a wider overview of the period than a single group can provide, to sample a little Baroque orchestral music, a couple of vocals and choruses, and a few solo violin, cello, and harpsichord solos. To this end, the company culled some of their best material in a collection lasting a little over an hour.
Among the pieces are Handel's Arrival of the Queen of Sheba, Bach's Air on the G string and Gavotte from the Suite No. 3, and Purcell's Rondo from Abdelazar, all with Tafelmusik.
