ARIZONA DIAMONDBACKS
KEY PLAYER: 3B Chad Tracy must recapture the form he displayed last season for the lineup to be a force in the second half. Pitchers have thrown him far more off-speed and breaking pitches this season, and he has struggled to adjust. With LF Luis Gonzalez struggling, the club desperately needs Tracy, its No. 3 hitter, to get on base more consistently and drive in runs.
BURNING ISSUE: When do the Diamondbacks bring up the kids? The organization is loaded with talent at Class AAA Tucson. That presents management with a dilemma. If it believes the veterans give the club the best chance of winning this year, it will stick with them. Otherwise, it will take a shot at winning the division title with the youngsters.--Steve Gilbert
COLORADO ROCKIES
KEY PLAYER: For the Rockies to be anything more than an early-season surprise, 1B Todd Helton has to be a threat in the No. 3 spot. He continues to draw walks, but the team needs him to provide power and drive in runs. Helton, 32, has a history of doing that later in the season; after some of his extra offseason muscle wears away, his body is leaner and his timing is better.
BURNING ISSUE: The lineup must produce on a more regular basis--especially at home, where its struggles at times have been inexplicable. 2B Jamey Carroll has solidified the leadoff spot, Now it's up to complementary players such as SS Clint Barmes, CFs Cory Sullivan and Choo Freeman and Cs Yorvit Torrealba and JD Closser to be more consistent.--Thomas Harding
