CHICAGO CUBS
KEY PLAYER: The Cubs went 19-40 without 1B Derrek Lee (wrist) in the lineup. They sorely missed his production at the plate and his Gold Glove defense. His absence also affected the batting order; 2B Todd Walker is a better fit as a No. 2 hitter than a No. 3 hitter, but he had to bat third after Lee got hurt. Lee can't get the club back in the race by himself, but his return has a huge impact on the team.
BURNING ISSUE: Manager Dusty Baker's contract is up at the end of the season, but he might not last that long if the Cubs continue their sloppy play. This team has found countless ways to lose. There have been some growing pains with the club's youngsters, which was expected, but the veterans also are making too many mistakes.--Carrie Muskat
MILWAUKEE BREWERS
KEY PLAYER: Heading into the season, the Brewers' fortunes hinged on the health of ace RHP Ben Sheets, who was coming back from a shoulder injury. The same thing can be said about the second half--Sheets, who went on the D.L. in May with tendinitis in his pitching shoulder, is expected to return soon. If he reasserts himself atop the rotation, the team could make a run at a playoff spot.
BURNING ISSUE: Will LF Carlos Lee be in a Brewers uniform at the end of the season? He is in the last year of his contract, and the club is weighing whether to trade him for pitching depth. Lee is the team's most productive hitter by far; a trade would indicate the Brewers do not believe they can contend this season.--Adam McCalvy
