ATLANTA BRAVES
KEY PLAYER: For the Braves to make a run and compensate for their less than stellar pitching staff, they need 3B Chipper Jones to stay healthy and be a steady force in the lineup. He still is capable of being a power threat and a catalyst as the No. 3 hitter. Because the club lacks a proven leadoff man, there is more pressure on Jones to get on base ahead of CF Andruw Jones and RF Jeff Francoeur.
BURNING ISSUE: G.M. John Schuerholz's offseason neglect of the bullpen has been the most important factor in the team's demise. He must make one or more trades to bring stability to a relief corps that is filled with minor league-level talent. Acquiring a starter also could help the bullpen if the club opts to move RHP John Thomson out of the rotation.--Mark Bowman
FLORIDA MARLINS
KEY PLAYER: Rookie SS Hanley Ramirez quickly has assumed a leadership role. He bats leadoff or second and has taken charge of the infield. Ramirez, 22, has been slowed by nagging injuries--he sat out a few days with a sore shoulder, then suffered bruises on both hands after being spiked and hit by a pitch in the same game. His batting average has dipped a bit as a result of his injuries, but if he continues to mature he is capable of batting .300 with 200 hits and 100 runs scored this season.
BURNING ISSUE: Can so many rookies and players with little experience deal with the rigors of a full season? Twenty rookies have been on the roster this year, and the ones who still are around aren't used to playing into September. They'll be closely monitored for signs of wear and tear.--Joe Frisaro
