LOS ANGELES ANGELS
KEY PLAYER: The loss of RHP Bartolo Colon for most of the first half of the season greatly hurt the team's ability to compete. Colon has returned from his shoulder injury but still hasn't regained his Cy Young Award-winning form. His mid- to high-90s fastball has not returned, so he must rely on his two-seamer--but he is not getting good action on it. Colon also has had difficulty with his timing with runners on base. The Angels need him to regain his velocity and consistency and to remain healthy in the second half of the season.
BURNING ISSUE: If the Angels are going to get back into the race, they also will have to solve their problems on offense. They're not getting on base enough, and when a player does get on, his teammates fail to drive him in. Getting RF Vladimir Guerrero back on track will help solve part of the problem, but the club will have to find some outside help to revitalize the offense.--Mike Scarr

KEY PLAYER: The A's knew signing DH Frank Thomas as a free agent was a high-risk/ high-reward proposition, and the Big Hurt's first half gave them a look at both sides of the coin. The A's struggle to score when he's not in the lineup, so Thomas' good health is a must for the second half.
BURNING ISSUE: Injuries are the team's main concern. Already, the A's have used the D.L. 11 times--three more times than they did all of last year--resulting in more than 315 player games lost. If they ever get their original 25-man roster together, they could run away with the A.L. West without making a ...
