ABERDEEN, S.D. _ Fifty years ago, parents expected their kids to get the mumps and even hoped they did.
Mumps were common and simply part of growing up.
Today, most parents vaccinate their children against mumps, and an outbreak of the ailment makes the news. Web sites of state health departments give weekly updates on the viral infection's prevalence.
"It is funny how perspective changes," said Dr. Aristides Assimacopoulos, a South Dakota expert on infectious disease and director of infection control at Avera McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls.
