Guzzler air conditioners turned in: GTA residents bring 6,600 units in for recycling.

Over the last three weekends in June, Torontonians brought in more than double the number of air conditioners expected to be retired and recycled in the Keep Cool program.
The program -- run by Toronto Hydro, The Home Depot Canada, the Clean Air Foundation and the Conservation Bureau -- encourages Ontarians to recycle old inefficient room air conditioners, which contribute significantly to air pollution from coal-burning power plants.
About 6,600 electricity- guzzling air conditioners were dropped off at Home Depot stores between June 10 and 25 -- 3,300 more units than the program's goal of 3,000. About 1,800 Torontonians also signed up for Toronto Hydro's peakSAVER air conditioning -- a wireless device that cycles down homeowners' central air conditioners, water heaters and pool pumps when the electricity system is stretched.
