The tire and vehicle industry throughout the world was saddened to learn of the death of Tom French May 26 at his home in Sutton Coldfield, England.

In a career of nearly 40 years with Dunlop, the last 20 of these as leader of Dunlop's tire development team, Tom gained the professional respect and friendship of many of the world's great vehicle designers.

To those of us who had the privilege of working with him, Tom was an enigma to the last. Uniquely gifted as an innovator, he was one of those rare individuals capable of truly original thinking, and his ability to look at a problem from a completely new direction never failed to astound us.

The results of his vision and insight are apparent in the long list of successful innovations for which he was responsible.
