The Problem
A 54-year-old diabetic female with a history of hypertension and tobacco dependence comes in with new-onset left knee pain which you diagnose as degenerative joint disease; you plan for joint injection and physical therapy. Your practice recently developed a tobacco use identification system in order to comply with the new quality standards, and you determine that she smokes 1.5 packs of cigarettes/day and shows an interest in quitting. Neither she nor you have the time at this first visit to review the available medications and develop a treatment plan.
