ATLANTA -- The precise nature of the link between medical abortion and fatal toxic shock-like syndrome remains a mystery, but the handful of case reports have prompted diverging views about how such procedures should be carried out.
Physicians need to be alert for the features of toxic shock-like infections, including tachycardia, hypotension, edema, hemoconcentration, profound leukocytosis, and the absence of fever. The FDA recommends investigating for sepsis in any patient who presents after medical abortion with nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea and weakness, with or without abdominal pain.
