Bernie Taupin, the lyricist and longtime collaborator of Elton John, emerged from the spectral gloom of the Palace Theatre the other day, slipped on a pair of dark glasses, and crossed the street to a restaurant in the W Hotel. He was taking a break from working on the revisions to "Lestat," a John-Taupin musical based on Anne Rice's "Vampire Chronicles," which is opening this week on Broadway. "It's the show that et my life," he said wearily. After three years of writing, casting, and rehearsing, "Lestat" had a Christmastime tryout in San Francisco, where, by almost unanimous critical consensus, it was a disaster....
