BALTIMORE ORIOLES

The club and newly signed RHP Russ Ortiz are hopeful a reunion with pitching coach Leo Mazzone will get Ortiz back on track. Ortiz won 21 games in 2003 while pitching for Mazzone with the Braves.... To make room for Ortiz, the club sent LHP Adam Loewen, 22, back to the minors. Loewen, the fourth player taken in the 2002 draft, pitched relatively well in five starts with the Orioles. He has big-league stuff but must improve his command. HOT PROSPECT: The Orioles have raided Class AA Bowie and Class AAA Ottawa for talent. RHP Eddy Rodriguez already has been in the big leagues this season and has been brilliant since returning to Ottawa. If the Orioles need another reliever, Rodriguez will be on the shortlist of potential call-ups.--Spencer Fordin, Michael Gluskin

BOSTON RED SOX

The Red Sox acquired RHP Jason Johnson from the Indians last week because they saw a ground-ball specialist who could benefit from having a top infield behind him.... Expect hard-throwing RHP Craig Bansen, the club's first-round pick last year, to be a key part of the bullpen the rest of the season. Command of his slider and changeup will be key to his performance.... OF Gabe Kapler has regained the speed and explosiveness he had before suffering a ruptured Achilles' tendon. Kapler is popular, and his comeback will have a positive effect on the clubhouse. HOT PROSPECT: If the Red Sox lose a middle infielder to injury, they can call up Dustin Pedroia from Class AAA Pawtucket. Pedroia is regarded as a David Eckstein clone who specializes in getting on base. Pedroia might be best suited to play second base, though the Red Sox also are comfortable with him at shortstop.--Ian Browne

TAMPA BAY DEVIL RAYS

RHP Edwin Jackson is back with the club as a reliever. The team believes he'll be much more effective in short bursts; manager Joe Maddon noticed that during longer outings Jackson had good stuff for a while, then lost it for an inning or two.... RHP Seth McClung had the same problem and is making the transition to closer at Class AAA Durham. The Rays-and other teams--believe he has the stuff to become a quality big-league closer. He likely will pare his ...
