DIKEMBE MUTOMBO
In September, Dikembe Mutombo will realize the culmination of his magnificent dream. Mutombo, the 2001 Sporting News No. 1 Good Guy, will dedicate the Biamba Marie Mutombo Hospital and Research Center in Kinshasa, the capital of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. It is the first new hospital in 45 years in the very poor country, and it was constructed over the past five years despite enormous obstacles, including a civil war.
It's named after Mutombo's late mother, who died in Kinshasa eight years ago of an apparent stroke when a curfew prevented her from receiving medical help. This first phase of the hospital cost $17 million; of that, Mutombo, who was born in the Congo, contributed $15 million. The one-level hospital will open with 150 beds and will provide specialized care in such areas as pediatrics, general surgery and internal medicine. A second phase, costing $10 million, will add another 150 beds and surgical subspecialties.
Mutombo also just shipped two more ambulances to the Congo; he now has provided the only five functioning ones in Kinshasa. He is opening the hospital knowing that, with most citizens living on about $2 a day, he will absorb the bulk of medical costs.
"This hospital is opening," says Susan Johnson, the executive director of Mutombo's foundation, "because he never gave up. He is such a determined man."
