The article regarding the American Medical Association policy debate demonstrates the reason many doctors do not want to be involved with the organization ("AMA Guidelines on Pay for Performance Divide Specialities," July 15, 2005, p. 1).

The approach is sheepish and rather cowardly. Physicians place their life savings and careers on the line with every patient contact for an insultingly low rate. We are subject to providing free services every day that no other industry would accept. Unethical lawyers feed on misinformation to create income streams from bad outcomes.

Physicians should jointly oppose any reform until reimbursement rates are returned to a level that is conducive to good ...
