The Philadelphia Museum of Art is an imposing porticoed building that rises majestically on its granite hill at the end of the Benjamin Franklin Parkway. Historically, the museum is the legacy of the United States Centennial Exposition held in 1876 in Fairmount Park. At its conclusion, Memorial Hall, the art gallery for the exposition, remained open as the Museum of Art and Industry "for the improvement and enjoyment of the people of the Commonwealth." It served its purpose well, but by the turn of the twentieth century larger quarters were needed for the expanding collection.
