SEOUL, July 3 Asia Pulse - Unionized workers of Hyundai Motor Co. (KSE:005380), South Korea's top automaker, voted Friday for their union to separate from a national umbrella labor group, paving the way for the union to exercise more power in disputes with company management, a union official said.
Of the 39,937 union workers who voted, 71.54 per cent backed the action, the union said on its Web site.
With the outcome, the 44,000-strong union of Hyundai Motor is to split from the Korean Confederation of Trade Unions, one of the country's two umbrella labor groups, and be put under the control of the smaller and more specialized Federation of Korean Metal Workers Trade Unions, the official said.
The move is likely to strengthen the labor union's hand in negotiations with Hyundai Motor's management because it can now pursue industrial action without having to consult the KCTU, experts said.
