SEOUL, July 3 Asia Pulse - A South Korean boat left port in Busan Sunday to conduct a maritime survey of waters off the country's islets of Dokdo in the East Sea, a state-run institute said.
The 2,533-ton vessel with about 20 crew members departed the port at around 10:30 p.m. to survey the islands often claimed by Japan, according to the National Oceanographic Research Institute, which has commissioned the survey.
The South Korean government announced plans Thursday to conduct a 12-day-long survey from Monday.
The move is the latest in a series of spats over the islets between South Korea and Japan.
Japan and South Korea were on the verge of a maritime clash in April when the Japan Coast Guard said it planned to conduct a similar survey in waters near the islets.
The crisis was averted through an eleventh-hour deal between the two nations' vice foreign ministers in which Tokyo withdrew its survey plan and the two countries agreed to resume bilateral talks over the demarcation of their maritime border.
The exclusive economic zones (EEZ) claimed by the two countries overlap around the islets.
