(From Irish Independent)
I didn't know whether to laugh or cry when I read Martin Breheny's article 'GAA Takes On World Cup and Wins' (Irish Independent Sport, June 27).
Oh dear.
And I can't be sure which I found the most bizarre: the provincialism; the xenophobia or the inherent inferiority complex that drove the writer to compile such nonsensical statistics.
Here are a few stats of my own:
Every World Cup match in Germany was sell-out by a factor of ten to one. That is, ten fans tried to buy every ticket available.
And 30 billion people (that's 30,000,000,000, Martin) will have tuned into the tournament on TV by July 9. In comparison, one billion will watch the Ryder Cup. Simply put, it has been a massive footballing, cultural and commercial success.
