WAGES in the electricity & gas industry soared 13pc in the twelve months to March, and now average 1,300 a week, latest figures show.

The pay bonanza in the state-dominated sector is in sharp contrast to the situation in the rest of industry, and even in the booming building trade, where earnings are now rising more slowly than the national average.

The wages of electricity and gas workers were mainly responsible for a 4pc rise in industrial earnings per hour. A reduction in hours worked saw weekly earnings rise just 2.5pc.

However, hourly earnings rose more slowly in manufacturing, up by 3.2pc. Employers have complained about competitive price pressures from abroad for some time, but the Irish Business and Employers Confederation (IBEC) welcomed signs that the rate of job losses in industry is slowing.

Rapid pay rises may also be a thing of the past in the construction trade. Overall, building workers saw only a 1pc rise in pay over the twelve months, as an hourly earnings increase of 2.9pc ...
