mixed carotenoids
These antioxidant substances may protect against chronic disease. Oxidative damage is thought to play a role in the development of several diseases, including heart disease and cancer, according to a January 2006 study in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition. Kyung-Jin Yeum, PhD, and her team at Tufts University found that carotenoid supplements reduced DNA damage in women ages 50-70. What's more, mixed carotenoids--4mg per day each of lutein, lycopene and beta-carotene--were as effective as 12mg per day of a single carotenoid. "I was so pleased to see the effect of mixed carotenoids because it can be easily achieved by dietary modification and it does not require a large dose of a single nutrient to prevent DNA damage," Yeum says.
buyer's guide: Eat a rainbow of fruits and vegetables because each color contains different nutrients, according to the Produce for Better Health Foundation, and consider a supplement that contains mixed carotenoids.
how much to take: The Institute of Medicine has not set recommended daily allowance (RDA) levels for carotenoids, but a 2000 government publication specifically cited alpha-carotene, beta-carotene, beta-cryptoxanthin, lutein, lycopene and zeaxanthin for the prevention of chronic disease.
