Soft Implants

F

or women who undergo breast augmentation, the most common complication is a painful and distorting hardening of the shell around the implant. Capsular contraction, as it's known, affects up to 10 percent of these patients within one year of surgery. Implant texture was once thought to be a factor, but now the leading theory is that the cause is low-level bacterial contamination, says Dallas plastic surgeon William P. Adams Jr. His study of 335 patients at the University of Texas found that washing the tissue around the implant with a particular combination of antibiotic solutions during surgery can help prevent the problem. Six years after the procedure, patients treated with this regimen had a rate of contraction that was four to five times lower than that of participants in FDA studies. In addition, the antibiotic-treated patients had reoperation rates of only 2.8 percent, versus 15 to 20 percent of women in implant companies' clinical trials.
