The appearance in one year of two volumes of papers devoted to western European hagiography and saints' cults is an indication of the current popularity of the subject. The collection edited by Heinzelmann stems from the project which he codirects on 'Les sources hagiographiques narratives composees en Gaule avant l'an mil' and three of the papers were originally given at the seminar of the Institut Historique Allemand de Paris. These consist of: Guy Philippart reviewing contributions to Analecta Bollandiana for the period 1960--89 and commenting rather wordily and at times self-evidently on the study of hagiography; Francois Dolbeau presenting a miscellany of source-material, …
