Since 1959, the Gallup Organization has asked Americans to imagine a ladder with ten rungs and then to tell interviewers where the country was on that ladder five years ago, where it is today, and where they expect it to be five years from now. Americans' optimism shines through the data. They are consistently more upbeat about the future than about the present. They continue to be optimistic about their personal lives and their jobs, too.
