Americans spend about $150 billion every year just doing their taxes. Only about 13 percent of U.S. taxpayers tile without the aid of tax software or tax professionals, and literally a majority of Americans now have to pay someone else to figure their tax bill. We spend more on calculating our taxes than on electricity for our homes, buying televisions, or purchasing the cereal we eat for breakfast every year. These high compliance costs hit rich and poor alike. Roughly three fourths of the low-income families who claim the Earned Income Tax Credit now employ a professional tax preparer.

Of course, the true economic damage done by our tax system is much higher ...
