Many parents and students have come to realize that left-wing professors and administrators set the tone in most of academe. But how to restore some balance to universities grown hostile to middle-class values?
Enter David Horowitz, the firebrand former Marxist who turned rightward some years ago. He is attempting to moderate academic politics by taking the case straight to those he thinks are best-positioned to get results: state legislators and U.S. congressmen.
His vehicle is an Academic Bill of Rights whose language wouldn't raise an eyebrow on a more level playing field: "All faculty shall be hired, fired, promoted, and granted tenure on the basis of their competence and appropriate knowledge in their field of their expertise.... No faculty shall be hired or fired or denied promotion or tenure on the basis of his or her political or religious beliefs."
On grading, it states that "Students will be graded solely on the basis of their reasoned answers and appropriate knowledge of the subjects and disciplines they study, not on the basis of their political or religious beliefs" And regarding campus speakers: "Selection of speakers, ...
