RICHMOND, Va. -- A recent release (June 21, 2006) by the American Cancer Society states that "Marlboro is the most heavily advertised brand in the United States." In 2005 and to date in 2006, we placed no consumer advertising for our cigarette brands, including Marlboro, in any newspapers or magazines. In fact, Philip Morris USA's spending on cigarette brand advertising as reported to the Federal Trade Commission decreased for the sixth consecutive year as the company continued to reduce magazine, newspaper and retail point of sale advertising in 2003.
