Autistic children who took risperidone demonstrated significant improvements in adaptive behavior in their daily living skills, socialization skills, and communication skills, reported Susan K. Williams, Ph.D., of Yale University, New Haven, Conn., and her colleagues.

The investigators evaluated the effects of 6 months of additional standard risperidone treatment on adaptive behavior in an open-label study of 48 children from a larger trial. These children were aged 5-17 years, and their mean age was 9 years. Their disruptive behavior had improved after taking risperidone (J. Am. Acad. Child Adolesc. Psychiatry 2006;45:431-9).
