THE DANGLING MAN
after the execution of Colin Ross at
the Melbourne Jail in 1922 for the rape
and murder of 12 year old schoolgirl
Alma Tirschke
At the end of the failed gallows fall
and the miscarriage of the slip knot
he struggles in a grotesque dance
of choking air for half an hour.
The discourse on his innocence or guilt
ends in unconsecrated earth
of the jail's cemetery
filled in with only quicklime and dark.
Too late--even the appeal for anything
and the jury foreman's mouth is continually
stopped on a unanimous verdict.
Serious questions still hanging
