The faculty at a Washington DC university for the deaf voted no confidence in its newly chosen president and the board that hired her.

Gallaudet University's newly named president Dr. Jane Fernandes said the debate came down to whether people thought she was "deaf enough" for the job. Fernandes, who is scheduled to take office in January, was born deaf, but grew up speaking and did not learn American Sign Language until she was 23.

Some faculty said they opposed Fernandes' appointment because of her job performance during her six years as provost there. Other critics say she is not the right person to represent the deaf community.
