ASCERTAINING AN AUTHOR'S reasons for writing about a subject is crucial to assessing their approach and evaluating their conclusions. In many respects, Chris McGillion might appear an unlikely author of a book about the inner workings of the Anglican Diocese of Sydney. He is a Roman Catholic, religious affairs columnist with the Sydney Morning Herald and senior lecturer in print journalism at Charles Sturt University. One might not unfairly also ask whether he has the theological understanding needed to describe a community of people formed by very subtle doctrinal nuances and sustained by peculiar attitudes to God and the world.
