Pemoline (Cylert) appears to be effective in treating childhood attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder and other behavioral problems. It is commonly used only after dextroamphetamine (Dexedrine and others) or methylphenidate (Ritalin) have been found ineffective, or to have intolerable side effects. Note the 1993 Physicians Desk Reference warning: "There have been reports of hepatic dysfunction including elevated liver enzymes, hepatitis and jaundice in patients taking Cylert ... Although no causal relationship has been established, there have been rare reports of hepatic-related fatalities involving patients taking Cylert."
