Bush inquires about a bikini wax-it may sound like a dirty joke, but it's actually the story of how the term "bikini wax" found its place in the pages of Merriam-Webster's Collegiate Dictionary. In 1994, Maureen Dowd revealed to the New York Times Book Review that former First Lady Barbara Bush once told her about the time George H.W. asked her, "What's a bikini wax?" Merriam-Webster's wordsmiths took notice and monitored the term's usage for about ten years before adding it to the eleventh edition in 2005. But they're not the only ones expanding their beauty vocabulary. The online edition of the Oxford English Dictionary now includes "microdermabrasion" and "nip and tuck," while both Oxford (hardcover) and The American Heritage Dictionary Fourth Edition explore the latest skin-smoothers with "cosmeceutical" and "Botox." We can't wait for the illustrated versions. -KATHERINE DYKSTRA
