Notts face the spectre of relegation from County Championship Division One just one season after winning the title, if their batting does not improve.
That is the frank verdict of director of cricket Mick Newell ahead of Middlesex's visit to Trent Bridge today.
Notts are 11 points adrift at the bottom of the table and have still to win a four-day match in six attempts. Their latest setback came in a 299-run hammering at Hampshire last week, who moved clear at the top as a result.
