I am one. I am a Detroit Tigers fan.
I have worn headphones at my wife's family reunions for 18 straight years so I can listen to Tigers games. For years--I can't even remember how many--I've heard or seen every game, either on radio, on television or at the ballpark. I have a Tigers room in my house, complete with about 50 versions of their cap. I have made bets the team would finish here or there or beat this team or that. People have used my bets as retirement plans. I read both Detroit newspapers and visit several club-related websites daily. I call in to sports radio talk shows. I blog.
Sure, the past, oh, decade-plus has been a bit distressing. In fact, it's been one long string of bad news. No winning seasons since 1993. One hundred nineteen losses in 2003. Even a seeming distaste for success by the franchise; I tasted it, too. There was a lack of team discipline. Poor managers. Inadequate talent on the major and minor league level. General fan disinterest at an all-time high.
Yet my allegiance remained steadfast, my optimism still blind after all the embarrassment, anger and disappointment and never mind the laughter and taunts hurled at me when I've worn Tigers gear.
Fortunately for me and the hidden legions of other ardent fans, things eventually change. This year, something's in the air--and for once it doesn't stink. A sweet smell of success permeates the organization.
