CHICAGO WHITE SOX
Newly recalled RHP Jeff Nelson, 39, will work in a late-inning relief role; the team is confident his off-speed stuff still is good enough to neutralize righthanded hitters.... OF/IF Rob Mackowiak has been getting more starts in center field, but the club hasn't given up on rookie CF Brian Anderson. Mackowiak, a lefthanded hitter, is spellingAnderson, a righthanded hitter, against tough righthanded pitchers. SEE A DIFFERENT GAME: C A.J. Pferzynski has made slight adjustments to his hitting mechanics, but the main reason for his early success at the plate is a change in approach. SEE A DIFFERENT GAME: RF Casey Blake's torrid and surprising start at the plate is the result of his laying off pitchers' pitches. In the past, be had a tendency to chase everything, but these days he's laying off or fouling off tough pitches and taking advantage of pitchers' mistakes.--Anthony Castrovince
KANSAS CITY ROYALS
LHP Mark Redman (forearm), out with an injury for the second time this season, still hasn't won and has a 6.88 ERA. The team already has shown it's willing to drop a starter, though Redman's contract might be too big to eat. LHP Jimmy Gobble is starting in Redman's place.... There was one bright spot during the team's losing streak: CF David DeJesus (hamstring) started his minor league rehab with Class AAA Omaha. When he returns, he will be counted on to ...
