Striking minor league umpires have the support of their major league counterparts, who have taken up several collections on their behalf.

Joe West, a 29-year big-league veteran, made clear his admiration for the 220 minor league umpires who have "stayed strong" throughout this two-month strike as high school and college umps take their place.

"This whole mess is a show of strength (by Major League Baseball)," West says. "This is the only labor strife I've ever seen where the alternate work force is costing more than the regular guys did."

Adds Gary Darling, a 19-year veteran: "They deserve to get whatever they can. They're underpaid."
